Tristan du Varlyr is the last known1 living descendant of HRH Riven du Varlyr, the Crown Prince of Brinn, and as such is considered to be the legitimate heir to the title of King of Brinn. His uncle Lothan du Varlyr currently holds the title, having retroactively self-legitimized his bastardy as son of Riven's father Taranis du Varlyr, the last King of Brinn to hold the title uncontested. Lothan remains without issue, so even if his title is never challenged, Tristan is still the rightful heir apparent to the throne.
Having been involved in the successful conclusion of the Ahrimid-Valtan War, Tristan's identity has become an open secret. Still, he refuses to make a claim for his uncle's throne, citing a lack of credentials on his part, and a desire to avoid needless bloodshed. Political opinion on this statement tends to converge on the idea that Tristan is content to wait out his uncle, who shows no sign of seeking a legitimate heir, rather than risk open conflict. Few speculate that his motives are spoken plain.
Tristan was offered the hand of Ayse Aslaney, Queen of Valte, by her royal person. The marriage would have united their houses, and given him a powerful army that would have posed a very credible threat to Lothan's rule in Brinn. Tristan declined the offer, however, and chose to marry Carlotta Valentinia of Avila, a commoner2, citing true love and a greater opportunity to good than any military alliance would grant. His relations with Valte remain strained by this decision.
Recently, Lothan has offered an olive branch to Tristan, declaring him a "treasured family member" and "last true kin" to the king. He has been invited to join his uncle at court, where he will be announced as the heir to the throne, and given titles and duties befitting the crown prince. He has yet to reply to this invitation.
Notes:
- 1: It is known only to a very small few that Rycar Stone is a bastard descendant of Riven, and shares the last living blood of the king with Tristan.
- 2: Technically, Carlotta is a member of the equestrian class of Ascadian society. Though not a noble, she is one of only two heirs to Marcellus Valentinius, estimated to be among the three richest men in the Ascadian Empire.

Notes
- Youngest child of the crown prince of the du Varlyr dynasty of Brin. Father was slain in battle during the Civil War against his uncle when he was only 3 years old. As the tide of the war turned against the ruling dynasty, his mother, sister (6 years his elder), and he were spirited away from the capital by the Order of the Rose into the court of his mother's family, the court of Isram of Valte (his mother being the elder sister of Isram's wife).
- Safe from attack for the moment, but not from the threat of assassination, he was raised in the fortress like retreat of the royal family in Valte for ten years under the protection of his aunt's household and his family's loyal retainer, Lothar Dayne. In Valte, he was raised like the successor of Brin with his sister Banarga and his cousins Osman and Ayse. He was a royal page, and eventually a squire for his older cousin Osman, who he admired.
- When the attack by the Ahrimids came, when Tristan was 13, he was serving as a page to his cousin Osman. The two heirs were under the protection of Lothar Dayne, hunting in the Valtan grasslands when they intercepted an Ahrimid scouting force. The three were able to survive the reconaissance, but the trip proved a critical distraction as assassins, hired by his uncle in Brin, were able to infiltrate the Valtan citadel, murdering both his mother and his sister before giving their life in the assault.
